Administrative Information
Acquisition Information
Received as part of the Edmund G. Brown papers (BANC MSS 68/90), as a gift from Brown, December 1967.
Processing Information
Original labeled folders and envelopes have been retained with their original content whenever possible, even if the folder
contains just one item. When an archival folder is used, the original labeled folder or envelope has been retained with the
contents. Contents of a labeled folder that are clearly a different subject have been removed and foldered elsewhere. Dates
on original folders are often dates of correspondence, not dates the photographs were taken.
Approximate dates of undated photographs are based on Brown’s apparent age, the style of his eye glasses, and the style of
Bernice Brown’s hair. During the 1958 campaign, Edmund G. Brown’s glasses are wire rimmed at bottom of lens. When he is sworn
in as governor in January 1959, he is wearing eye glasses that are dark with a largish decorative metal pieces at the hinge
and light decorative sides. Around 1962 his eye glass frames are a solid dark color with small decorative metal pieces at
the hinge.
Biographical Information
Edmund G. Brown was born in San Francisco on April 21, 1905, to Ida and Edmund Joseph Brown. He married Bernice Layne in 1930
and they had four children: Barbara Brown [Casey] (born July 13, 1931), Cynthia Brown [Kelly] (born October 19, 1933), Edmund
Gerald "Jerry" Brown, Jr. (born April 7, 1938), Kathleen Lynn Brown (born September 25, 1945).
After graduating from law school in 1927, he started his political career by unsuccessfully running for several political
positions. He won the race for District Attorney of San Francisco in 1943, a position which he served for seven years. In
1950, he was elected as Attorney General of California, and held that position until he successfully ran for Governor of California
in 1958.
Major policies enacted during his two terms as governor, from 1959 to 1967, included the California Master Plan for Higher
Education, the Fair Employment Practices Act (FEPA), the Rumford Fair Housing Act, the California State Water Project and
other infrastructure projects.
After his political career, he remained in the public eye through public appearances and speaking engagements. In 1980 he
started the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Government Affairs, which in 1987 became the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute
of Public Affairs, a non- partisan public policy center.
Edmund G. Brown died on February 16, 1996, in Beverly Hills, California.
