Subseries 1.1: Consulting, Courtesy and Professional Work. 1887-1934

Physical Description: Carton 1; Carton 2, folders 1-54; v. 1-2; AX box 1, folders, 1-18; Oversize box B, folders 1-3; Oversize box C, folders 1-2; Oversize folder D, 1; Oversize folder F, 1; Oversize folder G, 1-2; NNEG boxes 1-3

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically by project, based upon the date of the earliest photographs of each project.

Scope and Content of Subseries

Consists of photographs related to M.M. O’Shaughnessy’s work as a consulting engineer, as well as projects O’Shaughnessy consulted for as a professional courtesy to his fellow engineers. The Hawaii and San Diego, Calif. projects (San Diego Water Supply) are grouped together. The name, organization or company responsible for construction is included in the container listing when known. The snapshots were probably taken by M.M. O’Shaughnessy.
Photographs prior to O’Shaughnessy’s 1912 appointment as City Engineer of San Francisco include the irrigation aqueducts constructed for various sugar plantations on the Hawaiian Islands (1899-1906). Another large group of photographs is of projects completed by O’Shaughnessy while he was Chief Engineer of the Southern California Mountain Water Co. in San Diego (1907-1912), including the Morena Dam (the largest rock-fill dam in the world upon its completion, and the only dam in its region to withstand the devastating flood of 1916). Around 1912-1914, the City of San Diego purchased the water system built by the Southern California Mountain Water Co.
Throughout his career as San Francisco City Engineer and after, M.M. O’Shaughnessy was involved with numerous engineering projects as either a consultant or advisor. Among the projects pictured are the Throttle Dam in New Mexico; the new Lower Otay and Barrett Dams in San Diego County; the Skagit River Power Plant for Seattle, Washington; the Detroit Urban Railway system; the new Bowman Dam in Grass Valley; and the Juncal Dam in Santa Barbara County.

First are views of identified locations, starting with California and the United States, then other countries, which are arranged alphabetically. The bulk of these are commercial views probably collected by the O’Shaughnessy family during their travels. Photographs of identified locations were included here because it was undetermined what else they were related to.
