The Ruth McDonald Boyer Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by the California College of the Arts in 2012. Additional
materials were transferred from the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum in 2013.
No additions are expected.

Biography/Organization History
Ruth Boyer received her B.A. in Fine Art from U.C. Berkeley in 1950 and her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the same insitution
in 1962. She started teaching at U.C. Berkeley in the Department of Decorative Art in 1962. While at U.C. Berkeley she taught
History of Textiles, History of Costume, Folk Art and Modes of Communication. Dr. Boyer was Assistant Curator of Textiles
at the R.H. Lowie Museum of Anthropology in Berkeley from 1964-1972. Dr. Boyer began teaching at the California College of
Arts and Crafts in the spring of 1973. During her first semester she taught Historic Textiles of the New World, Oceania and
Africa and A Survey of Historic Textiles in Asia, India and Europe. She was the Chair of the Textile Department starting in
1978. Dr. Boyer published regularly from 1964-1983. She also gave talks on both psychological anthropology and textiles.
