Scope and Content of Collection

The William Randolph Hearst, Jr. photograph collection consists of approximately 2,500 photographic prints, 104 negatives and 5 drawings. These materials illustrate the private and public life of William Randolph Hearst, Jr. and the Hearst family from the late 1800s to 1990. Included are studio portraits (including three 19th century cartes de visite portraits), professional photographs, and amateur snapshots. Subjects include family life, newspaper business, social engagements, civic and charitable events, award presentations, and world travels. Locations include the Hacienda del Pozo de Verona (Pleasanton, Calif.); Wyntoon Estate (Calif.); Hearst Castle (San Simeon, Calif.) and New York (N.Y.), among many others.
The bulk of this collection is comprised of photographs of the private, public and business life of William Randolph Hearst, Jr. There are a few folders of images from his childhood and adult family life, but the majority relate to his public and professional life. The images reflect his social activities and travels, civic events, as well as his work at the New York Journal and the Journal-American newspapers. Of note are photographs related to the Hearst Task Force fact finding trips made for the Journal-American. Starting in 1955, Hearst traveled around the world with a group of newsmen interviewing world leaders. Some of the officials that the Task Force interviewed include Nikita Khrushchev, Chiang Kai-shek, Ngo Dinh Diem, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ferdinand Marcos, Anwar Sadat and U.S. presidents from John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan.
In addition to the photographs of William Randolph Hearst, Jr.’s life, there are hundreds of photographs relating to four generations of the Hearst family, from George and Phoebe Hearst through to the children of William Randolph Hearst Jr.’s brothers George, John, Randolph and David. Of note are several original portraits of George Hearst and Phoebe Apperson Hearst and numerous original portraits of William Randolph Hearst, Sr. and Millicent Hearst, as well as two folders of photographs of the funeral of William Randolph Hearst, Sr. Many images (chiefly in Series 1, but also found throughout the collection) are news photographs of various family members, clearly removed from the photograph files of a newspaper. These files are chiefly from the Journal American or from the New York Journal, or a combination of the two.
Photographs of William Jr.’s brothers George, John, Randolph and David Hearst range from their childhood to adulthood, and include some images of their wives and children. There are original family portraits and snapshots, but the majority of them are press photographs. Images of each of the four brothers are also found in photograph files relating to William Randolph Hearst, Jr. in Series 3.
Photographs used in or considered for the autobiography of William Randolph Hearst, Jr., The Hearsts : Father and Son, are encountered throughout the collection. When the collection was received, some of these photos were grouped together by the subjects: news and news people, planes, war, celebrities and world leaders; but most were dispersed throughout various files. These images are identified by a typewritten number on a small label on the back of the photograph. A numbered list (typescript) of these images is available in the library’s administrative collection file. There is no guide to the photographs’ current file location.

Series 1: News photographs 1927-1966

Physical Description: Cartons 1-2

Arrangement

Arranged by subject, then chronologically

Scope and Content of Collection

The News Photographs series is divided into two subseries: “Hearst Family” and ”William Randolph Hearst, Jr. Public Events”. The series consists of files of photographs of Hearst family members apparently removed in their entirety from the photographic files (“photo morgue”) of a newspaper. They were received by the Bancroft Library in folders with typewritten headings typical of newspaper photograph archives. These folders of photographs were kept intact by the Bancroft Library and established as a separate series because of their distinct character as files from a news archive.
Many of the prints are marked for publication, touched up, or have clippings mounted on the back. They also show signs wear and tear from heavy use. Most photographs are from the New York American or the Journal-American newspaper, and the remaining photographs are from wire services and other news agencies.
Bancroft Library staff arranged the folders in chronological order, or filed like subjects together. The folder contents were kept intact as received, but sorted by library staff. Obvious misfilings were corrected. In order to retain original notations and headings, the original folders were kept and used as dividers between new archival folders.
There is considerable duplication of images between this series and Series 2 (Hearst Family) and Series 3 (William Randolph Hearst, Jr.). Also, there are other news photographs throughout the collection that are not included here, particularly for William Randolph Hearst Sr. (two folders) and Millicent (25 folders). Since these other news photographs were received in plain office folders distinct from the folders in this series, they were added to the Hearst family photos in Series 2.

Arrangement

Arranged by subject

Scope and Content of Collection

The Hearst Family series consists of photographs of or pertaining to Hearst family members other than William Randolph Hearst, Jr. It includes press and publicity photographs, studio portraits, snapshots, and family albums. Individual press photographs filed here were not received by the library as part of the News Photograph files of Series 1, but may have similar or duplicative subject matter.
The Hearst Family series is arranged by person, starting with earlier generations and proceeding to younger members of the family. First are images of George Hearst, followed by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, William Randolph Hearst, Sr. and Millicent Willson Hearst. Images of the next generations: family portraits, brothers George, John and David and their families follow. At the end of the series are photographs of various Hearst estates. Related and duplicate views are also present in Series 1 (News Photographs). Although William Randolph Hearst, Jr. is included among the family photographs, the majority of photographs related to him are filed separately, as Series 3.
It should be noted that a file for an individual may contain portraits of that individual and/or views from events centered upon that individual. Therefore images of multiple family members and others may be found filed under a single name. For example, the funeral of William Randolph Hearst, Sr. is filed with the William Randolph Hearst, Sr. photographs and will include pictures of many people in attendance.
The William Randolph Hearst, Sr. files include portraits, a group of informal photographs, followed by a section of press photographs. These press photographs were not included in Series 1 (News Photographs) because they were not received in the distinctive original file folders characteristic of the Series 1 files. Rather, they were dispersed throughout the collection, as they now remain. The photographs illustrate his life as head of the Hearst media empire, host of parties at San Simeon, and father to five sons.
The Millicent Willson Hearst files include portraits and press photographs. Notes that came with the collection indicate that these photographs came from the files of the Journal American. Most have been retouched and have clippings glued on their back. Since the photos were received in plain folders distinct from the files in Series 1 (News Photographs) they were housed within the Hearst Family series rather than integrated with other news photographs. The original chronological arrangement was kept. The images are of Millicent in her role as a philanthropist raising money for the Free Milk Fund for Babies and various charities, and as a socialite attending dinners, openings, conventions and other social functions.

Scope and Content of Collection

Series 3 houses the bulk of the photographs of or relating to the private and public life of William Randolph Hearst, Jr. It does not include family group photographs when he is pictured with his parents or siblings, which are found in Series 2, Hearst Family. Related news photographs are also found in Series 1, Subseries 2 (News Photographs: William Randolph Hearst, Jr.)
Series 3 (William Randolph Hearst, Jr.) is divided into four subseries: 1) Portraits, Personal Life and Family; 2) Public, Social and Business Events; 3) Task Force and World Leaders; and 4) News and News People.
This series is arranged by subject, then date. When the collection was received, some photographs were loosely grouped by identified subjects (for instance “luncheons and banquets”, “award ceremonies”, and “celebrities”.) “World leaders or presidents” and “news and news people” were two topics that also appeared quite frequently within folders labeled as such. Since these headings were not a formal file system and were somewhat haphazard, Bancroft Library staff have retained and added to them, added other topical groupings when necessary, and arranged items chronologically within them.
