    Scope and Content of Collection

Mammoth plate California landscape views formerly belonging to artist William Keith. The majority of views are by photographer Carleton E. Watkins, an associate of Keith's, with several views by Thomas Houseworth also present. Yosemite scenes predominate. All images were poorly drymounted at an unknown time in the 20th century, and image quality is faded and very poor. It is possible that these photoprints were kept by Keith in his scrapbooks and were never mounted in Keith's lifetime, therefore opening the possibility that the poor condition is not simply the result of bad mounting, but of decades of use in an unmounted state. Their poor physical condition reduces research interest considerably, but the images remain an important document of Keith's collecting of California landscape photography. Furthermore, some of the images are exceptionally rare and may not exist in other research collections.

    Note

Photographs are in very poor condition, on 20th century mounts.
