Abstract: The Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman Papers document the couple’s environmental and nuclear disarmament activities with the Sierra Club from 1985 to 1994. These efforts focused mainly on campaigns to include nuclear disarmament in the Sierra Club’s policy agenda and publication of and research for environmentalist periodicals. The bulk of material consists of research for the publications, including government reports regarding the military’s impact on the environment, newsletters from various peace, environmental and nuclear disarmament groups, and newspaper and magazine clippings. Sierra Club activity files demonstrate Hilder and Liederman’s work to increase the organization's participation in anti-nuclear activities.

Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

The Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman April 20, 1997.

Processing Information

Processing of the Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman Papers was generously funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The Bancroft Library was awarded a Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant from 2010-2012, "Uncovering California's Environmental Collections," in collaboration with eight additional special collections and archival repositories throughout the state and the California Digital Library (CDL). Grant objectives included processing of over 33 hidden collections related to the state's environment and environmental history. The collections document an array of important sub-topics such as irrigation, mining, forestry, agriculture, industry, land use, activism, and research. Together they form a multifaceted picture of the natural world and the way it was probed, altered, exploited and protected in California over the twentieth century. Finding aids are made available through the Online Archive of California (OAC).
This collection was processed by Christina Mune in 2010.

Biographical Information

Lara Marie Hilder (Gundel), born 1946, earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Valparaiso University in 1967 and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from U.C. Berkeley in 1975. As a chemist and researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) since 1977, Hilder developed ground-breaking methods to measure air pollutants. Peter Liederman, born 1946, holds a B.A. in Political Science from San Francisco State University, an M.A. in Public Administration from Golden Gate University and a law degree from John F. Kennedy University School of Law. Since 1999 he has practiced real estate end environmental law in Berkeley, California.
Both Hilder and Liederman took an active interest in nuclear disarmament campaigns in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1980s and 1990s as leaders of the Sierra Club Disarmament Committee. As editors of the environmental periodicals Peacepaper(1986-1988) and IMPACTS(1991-1994), and contributors to the Sierra Club’s Yodeler, Hilder and Liedermen sought to educate the public and encourage activism regarding the negative environmental impact of the arms race and military nuclear development, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman Papers document the couple’s environmental activities with the Sierra Club Disarmament Committee from 1985 to 1994. These efforts focused mainly on campaigns to include nuclear disarmament in the Sierra Club’s policy agenda along with publication of and research for periodicals promoting the end of the arms race. Both acted as chief editors of Peacepaper (1986-1988) and IMPACTS (1991-1994), and were frequent contributors to the newspaper of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club, Yodeler. The bulk of material consists of research for the publications that includes government reports regarding the military’s impact on the environment, newsletters from various peace, environmental and nuclear disarmament groups, and newspaper and magazine clippings. Sierra Club activity files demonstrate Hilder and Liederman’s work as part of the Sierra Club Disarmament Committee to increase the organization's participation in anti-nuclear activities.
The collection has been divided into three series: Periodicals, Sierra Club Activities and Research Files. Periodicals and Sierra Club Activities reflect the original chronological organization of the collection. Research Files have been arranged alphabetically for better access and to express the relationship between the large number of files on the Department of Energy, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Navy’s policy of homeporting the USS Missouri in Alameda. Original folder titles and the order within folders have been maintained.
