Abstract: Shigeki Oka was a native of Kochi Prefecture, Japan, born 1878. He was employed by Yorozu Chh before relocating to the United
States in 1902. He was an influential journalist in the pre-war Japanese community. He was briefly interned at Heart Mountain
but was released to engage in propaganda activites against Japan. This collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts,
clippings, and other published materials related to the life of Shigeki Oka. It also includes a small collection of correspondence
and miscellaneous manuscripts written during his internment at Heart Mountain (ca. 1942). Materials in this collection are
primarily in Japanese, with some in English.

Biography
Oka was a native of Kochi Prefecture, born 1878; employed by Yorozu Chh before relocating to the United States; he arrived
in the United States, 1902; he was an influential journalist in the pre-war Japanese community and operated the Kinmon Press
(San Francisco) and published the
Amerika Shimbun and
fu Nipp (
Sacramento Daily News); was briefly interned at Heart Mountain but was released to engage in propaganda activities against Japan on behalf of the
British Armed Forces in India during World War II.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and other published materials related to the life of newspaper
publisher, socialist, and author Shigeki Oka. Clippings and published materials relate to research for Oka's publications
and includes information about Abiko Kyutaro and pre-war Japanese newspaper articles. Also includes a small collection of
correspondence and miscellaneous manuscripts written during his internment at Heart Mountain (ca. 1942), manuscripts of Oka
articles, and 1 diary.
Materials in this collection are primarily in Japanese, with some in English.
