Gift of Samuel Stark.
Biographical / Historical
Stark was an authority on and a collector of theater history. Stark's collection was started by his mother and aunt. Stark's
paternal grandmother was the sister of Joseph Schurmann of Holland, a French impressario who brought Bernhardt, Duse, and
Patti to the U.S. The core collection came to Stark on his mother's death in 1936, and he built on it through additional gifts
and purchases.
This collection is only a small part of what he gave to Stanford.
Preferred Citation
Samuel Stark Collection of Theater Scrapbooks. M0622. Dept. of Special Collections, Stanford Libraries, Stanford, Calif.
Scope and Contents
Collection of scrapbooks documenting 19th century & early 20th century stage and film actors with clippings, playbills, programs,
photographs and other ephemera. Although the scrapbooks once belonged to Samuel Stark, they were created by many different
people, some historians, some fellow actors or stagehands, and others more likely contemporary fans.
These scrapbooks frequently contain handwritten reviews, captions, and remembrances, as well as personal ephemera and material
related to other notable figures and celebrities. Some contain autographed and inscribed photographs and correspondence with
the actors themselves.
The emphasis is primarily on stage drama, but there is much material on vaudeville, minstrelsy, dance, burlesque and circus
work. The silent era of filmaking is also covered in some detail. There are scrapbooks on boxing and magicians (one each).
Conditions Governing Use
While Special Collections is the owner of the physical and digital items, permission to examine collection materials is not
an authorization to publish. These materials are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission
or reproduction beyond that allowed by fair use requires permission from the owners of rights, heir(s) or assigns. Some of
these materials are believed to be in the public domain. There are no restrictions on use of public domain materials.
