Administrative History
This is a factitious collection made up of individual items or small groups of items
donated or transferred to or purchased by University Archives.
The Greek Theatre was constructed in 1903, a gift of William Randolph Hearst, on the
site of a natural amphitheater known as Ben Weed's Amphitheater. The architect was
John Galen Howard. It was enlarged in 1957 with the addition of offices, dressing
rooms, etc.; the architect was Ernest Born.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of views of the Greek Theatre and events taking place in the
Greek Theatre, which include official university events such as Charter Day and
unofficial events as concerts, theatrical presentations and rallies. Many of the
event items contain named individuals, and these names have been included in the
captions where possible.
The collections is primarily of black and white photographic prints, but it also
includes black and white as well as colored postcards, both photographic and
printed. Items 8x10 inches and smaller have the designation UARC PIC 01; oversize
items have the designation UARC PIC 100.
