    Abstract: Edwin Augustus Lee (1888-1966) was born in Redding, California. He was the Dean and Professor of the UCLA School of Education (1940-55). While at UCLA, he expanded the School of Education from a credential program for elementary and secondary teachers to one offering curricula in many fields and all levels of education. He also established a teacher selection and counseling service, fought to preserve the University Elementary School, and supported the right of faculty to refuse to sign the loyalty oath. The collection contains manuscripts and correspondence files of Lee, relating to his career as a California educator and Dean of the School of Education at UCLA.

    Biography

    Lee was born in 1888, and was a native of Redding, California; graduated from Chico Teachers College; taught and helped build a vocational curriculum in the San Rafael public schools; MA and Ph.D from Teachers College, Columbia University; taught at Carnegie Institute for one year and Indiana University for four years; helped organize the American Vocational Association, and became its first president in 1925; head, Division of Vocational Education at University of California at Berkeley (1921-33); superintendent of San Francisco schools (1933-36); became Dean and Professor of the UCLA School of Education (1940-55); he expanded the School from a credential program for elementary and secondary teachers to one offering curricula in many fields and all levels of education; he established a teacher selection and counseling service, fought to preserve the University Elementary School, and supported the right of faculty to refuse to sign the loyalty oath; in retirement became coordinator of Foreign Student Affairs; author of several books, including Objectives and Problems in Vocational Education (1928) and As He Sees It: Selected Speeches (1957); he died on May 13, 1966.

    Scope and Content

    Collection contains manuscripts and correspondence files of Lee, relating to his career as a California educator and Dean of the School of Education at UCLA. Also includes Lee's speeches and notes for speeches, clippings, pamphlets and other printed materials, photographs, and photographic slides of songs.

    Organization and Arrangement

    Arranged in the following series:
    1. File of correspondence, notes, and manuscripts for addresses, articles, and conferences, 1931-65 (Boxes 1-10).
    2. Articles and clippings concerning Lee and his activities, photographs, pamphlets and other printed material, and memorabilia (Box 11).
    3. Activity file, 1944-51 (Box 12).
    4. Class notes (Box 13).
    5. Card file of speeches, 1922-57 (Box 14).
    6. File of notes for speeches (Box 15).
    7. Slides of songs (Box 16).
    8. As He Sees It--typescript of selected speeches of Lee (Box 17).
