Abstract: Matsunosuke Oi was born in 1885 in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. He arrived in the United States in 1906 and was a merchant and
community leader in Southern California and an active officer in various Japanese associations including being a founding
member of the postwar Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California. A bulk of the collection is about his participation
in that association. The collection also includes materials related to his life: personal papers including manuscripts of
his autobiography, correspondence related to the seizure of Oi's properties during his wartime internment, and a scrapbook
with newspaper clippings from the local press. Some materials in the collection are in Japanese.

Biography
Matsunosuke Oi was born in 1885; a native of Kochi Prefecture, he arrived in the United States in 1906; he was a merchant
and community leader in Southern California; he was an active officer in various Japanese associations and was a founding
member of the postwar Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of materials related to the life of Matsunosuke Oi. The bulk of the collection is made up of Oi's association
with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California and includes bylaws, notices, announcements, miscellaneous reports,
and financial reports. There are also miscellaneous reports and other material related to the Japanese American Citizens League.
Also contains personal papers of Oi and includes manuscripts of his autobiography, correspondence related to the seizure of
Oi's properties during his wartime internment, and a scrapbook with newspaper clippings from the local press (December 1941-April
1942).
Some materials in the collection are in Japanese.
