Biography / Administrative History
Dan Flynn, author of
Inside Guide to Sacramento: The Hidden Gold of California’s Capital, was born in 1961 in Oxnard, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from University of California, Santa
Barbara, and a master’s degree in political science from Rutgers University. Flynn moved to Sacramento in 1986 and worked
for the California state legislature until 2005, when he began working as the director of the Olive Center at University of
California, Davis.
Flynn came up with the idea to create a Sacramento guidebook when he saw there were few in existence. He began his research
for the book in 1992 and self-published it in 1994. He continued his research and re-published the book two more times, in
2000 and 2002.
The book itself provides trivia and an overview of Sacramento’s neighborhoods, restaurants, bars, cafes, nightlife, cultural
institutions, events, and accommodations. It also touches on the towns surrounding Sacramento, and lays out tours in specific
neighborhoods and the greater Sacramento area.
