    Biography

    William George Foote was born on July 7, 1897. In 1913, he went to work at the Southern Pacific Railroad's Sparks, Nevada shops as a machinist's apprentice. He was promoted to journeyman machinist in 1917. By May 6, 1935, Foote was a machinist and in 1941 was promoted to machinist foreman. He retired in July 1962 and was part of a group of retirees who met in 1981 who were featured in an article in the NEVADA STATE JOURNAL.

    Scope and Contents

    These papers document the forty-nine year career of William George Foote at the Southern Pacific Railroad's Sparks, Nevada shops. They include a photograph album with photographs of Foote and other Sparks shops employees at work and attending events from 1943-1960, membership cards for the American Railway Supervisor's Association from 1941 to 1962, an International Association of Machinists lodge 705 dues receipt book from 1935-1939, and 2 training certificates.
    Some of the photographs show architectural details of the Sparks, Nevada shops.

    Separated Materials

    Tools, including 37 conventional drill bits of various sizes, some of which are labeled "SP Co National". 21 bits with serrated edges, at least 2 hand-made wrenches, 13 punches, 2 keys, 1 amphere gauge, 3 gappers, calipers, rulers, a balpeen hammer, a putty knife, a wrench, a wheel defect, a coupler limit and a journal collar and journal filler gage have been removed and added to the CSRM artifact collection.
