Abstract: The Lawrence family lived in Sacramento, California, where Carl Lawrence was the owner of Lawrence Construction Company, a prominent building company in the Sacramento area during the 1950s and 1960s, and president of the Greater Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. His wife Marjorie was active in a number of local clubs and associations, many of which supported the arts in the Sacramento area, and his daughters, Linda and Nancy attended C.K. McClatchy High School. The nancy Lawrence family papers are composed of a variety of materials dating from 1841 to 2010 that were collected over the years by members of the Lawrence family and are comprised primarily of ephemera documenting the activities of Sacramento clubs and associations.

Biographical Note

Carl Kingsley Lawrence was born on February 6, 1901, in York in the province of Ontario, Canada. He later became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Both of his parents were also born in Ontario. His father, Charles Henry Lawrencce, worked at various times in his life as a minister, a laborer in a lumber yard, and a contractor. His mother was Matilda (Hutchinson) Lawrence. Carl Lawrence had one younger sister, Bernice Isabel (Mitchell) Lawrence.
Carl Lawrence attended UC Berkeley and graduated in 1923. He became an architect and a contractor in the building industry. After living in Oakland, California, he moved to Sacramento. He was the owner of Lawrence Construction Company, a prominent building company in the Sacramento area during the 1950s and 1960s. Carl married Marjorie Dale McGlashan, and the couple had three children together: Linda Margaret Lawrence (b. November 16, 1939), Nancy Kathryn Lawrence (B. December 29, 1943), and Patricia Kingsley Lawrence (b. January 31, 1949; d. March 19, 1947). Carl became president of the Greater Sacramento Chamber of Commerce in 1955. He was a member of the Sutter Club. He died on Spetember 17, 1974 in Sacramento.
Marjorie Dale Lawrence was born on Auguest 5, 1908 in California. Her father, John Henry McGlashan, was also born in California and worked as a farmer and livestock dealer. Marjorie's mother, Lelia Dale McGlashan (Maiden name: McCormick), was born in Missouri.
Marjorie was highly involved in many Sacramento area clubs and associations, especially those supporting the arts, and often took on leadership roles within these organizations. These clubs and associations included: the Sutter Club, the Saturday Club, the Tuesday Club, the Sacramento Philharmonic Association, the Sacramento Alumnae Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, the Sacramento Symphony League, the Womens Council of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Broadway Theater League, and the United Crusade campaign. Marjorie was an avid singer, performing as a member of the Saturday Club, the Tuesday Club, and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She passed away on July 13, 1986 in Sacramento.
Linda Margaret Lawrence was born on November 16, 1939. She attended C.K. McClatchy High School.
Nancy Kathryn Lawrence was born on December 29, 1943. She attended California Junior High School, where she performed modern dance in the school's variety show. She also attended C.K. McClatchy High School and graduated as part of the class of 1961.

The Nancy Lawrence family papers are composed of a variety of materials dating from 1841 to 2010 that were collected over the years by members of the Lawrence family. The collection is comprised primarily of ephemera such as programs, invitations, and other printed matter dating from 1923 to 2010 that documents the activities of various Sacramento area clubs and associations, particularly those supporting the arts. Also included is correspondence to and from Marjorie, Nancy, and Carl Lawrence from 1940 to 2010. Among the legal documents belonging to the Lawrence family are a Sacramento Abstract & Title Co. Abstract of Title, photographs of the lot, the will of Charles K. McClatchy, and life insurance and other receipts. Newspaper clippings include those related to Sacramento clubs and associations as well as to Sacramento area and other current events. A scrapbook assembled by Marjorie Lawrence containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera documenting activities of the Tuesday Club is also included in the collection.
