Biography
Maxwell Hunley Rare Books was an antiquarian book firm originally located in Beverly Hills, California and later in Pasadena
and South Pasadena, California. Maxwell Hunley moved to Los Angeles in 1930, where he began his career as an antiquarian bookseller.
His specialties were American and English literary classics, but he also sold western Americana, fine press books, tooled
leather bindings, juveniles, color-plate books and prints. One of Hunley's important early customers was Estelle Doheny. The
majority of his sales were made to institutions, including the Huntington Library.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a ledger recording sales, purchases and expenses for the period 1941-1948; ephemera including
a copy of Maxwell O. Hunley's lease for 9533 Santa Monica Boulevard, Beverly Hills, California dated June 29, 1962; and catalogs
of stock from Maxwell Hunley Rare Books.
