History

The W.B. Clarke & Co. Nursery (1920s-1950s) was based in San Jose, California. The founder and owner, Walter Bosworth Clarke, was an important breeder, selector, and producer of shade trees and landscape shrubs. He was best known for his lilacs, which bloomed well in coastal California's mild climate, flowering quinces, and flowering apricot. Many of the plants Clarke developed are still in commercial production.
