Biographical / Historical
John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, naturalist, and illustrator. He is considered one of the most prolific
and influential bird artists of the 19th century, and his works played a major role in the development of ornithology as a
scientific discipline.
Gould began his career as a taxidermist for the Zoological Society of London, where he developed an interest in bird specimens.
He later produced a series of books on birds, including "The Birds of Europe" (1832-1837), "The Birds of Australia" (1840-1848),
and "The Birds of Great Britain" (1862-1873).
Gould's illustrations were highly detailed and accurate, and he often depicted birds in their natural habitats. He was also
known for his skill in identifying new species, and he described and named many birds that were previously unknown to science.
In addition to his work as an ornithologist and illustrator, Gould was also a collector of natural history specimens, and
he amassed a large collection of birds, mammals, and insects from around the world. His collections formed the basis of the
Natural History Museum in London, which was established in 1881, the year of his death.
