Description
Typescript of Judge Widney's account of the riot and massacre of Chinese in Los Angeles, based on the trial of 10 people indicted
for the murders, which took place in front of Widney as Judge of the District Court of the Seventeenth Judicial District for
Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. The massacre was the result of a shootout between several Chinese men over the kidnapping
of a young Chinese woman, that led to a shootout with police and the death of a civilian. As a result, a mob of rioters forced
the Chinese out of the Coronel Building, where they had been hiding, to a makeshift gallows. 18 Chinese were murdered. A grand
jury returned 25 indictments but only 10 men stood trial.
