Biographical / Historical

Neville B. Eddlestone (1906-1987) was born in Lancashire, England and later moved to Alberta, Canada. After graduating high school, he relocated to California and studied at the Polytechnic College of Engineering in Berkeley. In 1929, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his college years, he started his railroad career as Gateman for Southern Pacific's Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley Electric Lines at the Oakland Pier. After working in various capacities for the electric lines during the 1930s, he was appointed as Trainmaster of the new Oakland Bay Bridge Railway in April 1939. He was promoteed to superintendent of the Interurban Electric Railway (IER) that ran commuter trains over the Bay Bridge in 1940 and then to manager in 1941. Eddlestone remained manager of IER until the entire operation was abandoned in mid-1941. He then worked as an operating official for Southern Pacific's Western and San Joaquin Divisions at Stockton until retirement in July 1970.

Scope and Contents

The Neville B. Eddlestone papers contain correspondence, photos, ephemera and a scrapbook created by Neville B. Eddlestone, an operating official for the Interurban Electric Railway and the Southern Pacific Company. His scrapbook contains photographs and other memorabilia taken during his time working for the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge Railway and the the Interurban Electric Railway Company. His papers contain letters in his correspondence files from author Robert S. Ford requesting information for his book RED TRAINS IN THE EAST BAY.
