Scope and Content Note

Bill files were created by Terry Friedman while he served as an Assembly Member from 1987 to 1994. The files may include bill analyses, amendments, resolutions, author statements, testimonies, press releases, letters of support and opposition, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and committee statements that pertain to numerous issues of concern to Friedman.
As an Assembly Member, Terry Friedman's legislative interests were varied. Some topics and bills of note include: sexual orientation discrimination (AB101, 1991-1992; AB2601, 1991-1992), gun control (AB1751, 1989-1990; AB1756, 1989-1990), environmental preservation (AB1152, 1991-1992; AB3459, 1991-1992), and work safety measures (AB1675, 1989-1990).

Scope and Content Note

Subject Files include press and news clippings, correspondence, support letters, bill analyses, local government reports, and/or interest group memoranda regarding topics at local, state, and federal level, as well as Friedman's personal interests. The topics addressed cover a broad spectrum of issues such as gun control, toxic waste disposal, gay rights, work safety measures, and Israeli-American affairs.

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by subject heading, then chronologically by date of publication.

Scope and Content Note

Press Clippings Files include articles related to bills authored by Terry Friedman, Friedman's political interests, and editorials written by Friedman. Articles are primarily derived from newspaper clippings, along with scholarly publications and professional journals. The scope of the articles pertains to Friedman's political interests, including gay rights, environmentalism, and the State of Israel.

Arrangement

Arranged with AB101 files first, followed by AB2601 files, and then legal case files, which are arranged roughly in alphabetical order by case name.

Scope and Content Note

Sexual Orientation Discrimination Files are focused on sexual orientation discrimination for employment and housing. The files include press and news clippings, legal case files, correspondence, support letters, bill analyses, personnel policy reports, local government reports and/or interest group memoranda regarding the AB101 (1991-1992) and AB2601 (1991-1992).

Arranged chronologically by election year, and alphabetically by subject heading thereunder.

Scope and Content Note

Campaign Files include records of Friedman's election campaigns for Los Angeles City Attorney, the California Assembly, and the Los Angeles Superior Court. The files include records of campaign strategies, political contribution statistics, nomination documents, correspondence, and campaign memorabilia.

Arranged chronologically by date of hearing.

Scope and Content Note

Hearing Files contain agendas, transcripts, background reports, testimonies, and meeting minutes for three separate Assembly Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health and Welfare hearings, occurring under Friedman's chairmanship. Hearings address cleanup operations and radioactive contamination issues at Rockwell International's Rocketdyne site in the Simi Hills, a proposal for the restoration of family planning funds cut by the 1989-1990 Budget Act, and discrimination based on sexual orientation.
