Lewis H. Chamberlin (1843-1923), was a resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan, who enlisted as a private in 24th Michigan Volunteer
Infantry in August, 1862. He later rose to the rank of the 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant. The 24th Michigan served
in the Army of the Potomac, and was assigned to the famous Iron Brigade. It took part in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
and Gettysburg campaigns, played an important role in Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 campaign, and was engaged heavily at Wilderness,
Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. In the spring of 1865, the Regiment was separated from the Iron Brigade, and assigned to duty
at Camp Butler, Illinois. In May 1865, the regiment was part of the honor guard at Lincoln's Funeral in Springfield, Illinois.
It was mustered out on June 30, 1865. After the war Chamberlin served as Secretary and Business Manager of Detroit Board of
Education from 1895 to 1901 and Auditor from 1901 to 1920.
A collection of 152 items which contains letters and documents (1862-1920) mostly related to Lewis H. Chamberlain's duties
as Regimental Adjutant. Included are papers related to the Regiment's personnel and ordnance, courts martial, furloughs, passes,
transfers, detailing, desertions, payments as well as regimental and company orders. Correspondents include Henry A. Morrow,
Albert M. Edwards, George H. Thomas, and Lorenzo Thomas. The letter from Henry A. Morrow of May 19, 1865 describes the victory
march of the Army of the Potomac.
