    Custodial History

    The journal was left by the Charles O. Loomis in a hotel owned by D. W. Madden in Tulare, California. Madden's granddaughter, Lillian Gorham, donated the volume to the Southwest Museum in 1926.

    Scope and Contents

    This collection contains a leather-bound journal, written in pencil and ink, written by Charles O. Loomis of Ripley, Chatauqua County, New York, during his travels to California from March 25, 1852 to March 25, 1853. Written on the first page: Memorandum or Travels to California. This collection also includes a typed transcript of the journal, and acid-free copies of the typed transcript.
