Background

Scope and content:

Letters by Frank J. Fay to Patrick Hoey, James Montgomery, and Irish actress Sara Allgood, written from Dublin, New York City, Chicago, Liverpool, and London. The main topic of the letters is Fay's work as an actor and director, and in one letter he writes about Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Biographical / historical:

Francis John Fay was born in Dublin, Ireland in August 1870. He graduated from Belvedere College and went to work for an accountancy firm in Dublin. Fay always had an interest in the theater and acting, and with his older brother, William Fay, he staged productions around Dublin, and the brothers joined the Irish Literary Theatre. In 1902 they created W. G. Fay's Irish National Dramatic Company. In May 1904, the brothers co-founded the Abbey Theatre, the National Theatre of Ireland. The brothers resigned from the theatre in 1908 over disagreements with the company, and the Fays moved to the United States and toured there. In 1921 he returned to Dublin where he taught acting and directing in local colleges. Frank Fay died in Dublin in 1931.
