    Biographical / Historical

    Real de Catorce is a town in the Catorce Mountains, about 90 miles north of the city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. It was founded in 1779 and was known throughout the 19th and early 20th century for its silver mining operations. The de la Maza family were early mine owners and developers and a prominent presence in the region.

    Scope and Contents

    Materials related to the silver mining operations of the de la Maza family at the Real de Minas del Catorce, San Luis de Potosi, Mexico. Includes 12 photographs from about 1900 featuring views of the mine enclosures, people on horseback, aerial views of the church and railway transport cars, and the dam from various angles. Also includes one bound map embossed with the name Gregorio de la Maza Utrera: Mapa Minero y Geológico del Distrito de Catorce Estado de S. Luis Potosi. 1885; and two publications: Exposición y dictámenes, Sobre la Libertada de Impuestos a las Platas en el Estado de San Luis Potosí, 1868; and Apuntes para un Proyecto de Código de Minería presentado al Señor Ministro de Fomento General D. Carlos Pacheco por el Ingeniero de Minas, Santiago Ramirez, 1884.
