Biographical / Historical

Lois Ann Kroll was an Arabian horse trainer and owner. She also was the author of a book on show costumes for Arabian horses and riders. Kroll was born on December 1, 1932 in North Dakota. In 1963, Kroll wrote a book called Arabian Costumes, which taught readers how to design costumes for Arabian horses and their riders. She revised the book in 1999. In addition to designing costumes, Kroll also trained and owned Arabian horses and rode horses in various shows and events, including the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. She was owner of Silver Shadows Arabians in the community of Canyon Country in California. Kroll died of pancreatic cancer on August 8, 2006. She was 73 years old.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes drafts, notes, and correspondence related to her books; photographs; film reels; and horse show costumes and decorated tack.

Scope and Contents

The series contains drafts, sketches, and photographs related to Lois Ann Kroll's book: Arabian Costumes. There are materials related to both the original publication of the book in 1963 and the revision published in 1999. There are also clippings from Arabian Horse World and a story Lois Ann Kroll wrote about one of her Arabian horses titled The Miracle of Silver Sahara.

The materials in the " Arabian Costumes - Revision, Draft" folder were initially in a binder. The file contains a draft of the revised Arabian Costumes book and bills and invoices relating to the publication of the book. The file also contains two pages of unrelated notes that were in the binder.

Scope and Contents

The series includes photographs of Lois Ann Kroll and various Arabian horses; photographs of horses and their riders in costume; and photographs of horses owned by Kroll and Silver Shadow Arabians that were originally in a photo album. The horses in the photographs include Abugar, Lassie, Talassi, Susie, Silverette, Rebecca, and The Silver Shadow.

Series 4: Art and Realia circa 1963-2006

Scope and Contents

The series includes rider costumes and matching horse tack, including a black, gold, and red costume known as the Phoenix costume with black and gold versions of garments for the rider, a "native" or Middle-Eastern style costume in purple referred to as the Purple Costume, and a green, nautical-themed costume referred to as the Sea Creature costume; a blue dress probably worn by Kroll in the Tournament of Roses parade; and ribbons from the Sierra Empire Arabian Horse Show and the Los Angeles County Fair.

The series also contains several paintings, including an oil painting of Lois Ann Kroll. The Assorted Prints and Posters folder includes prints of "Pharaoh's Horses" by John Frederick Herring, "The Arab Tent" by Edwin Landseer, and "Stampede of the Waves" by Ila McAfee.
