Reverend Amzi C. Wright missionary photographs and lantern slides

Scope and Contents

Collection of photographs and lantern slides depicting labor, religion, scenery, social life & customs in China, Japan and Korea. These were created or collected by Rev. Amzi C. Wright (1859-1932), a Methodist missionary with the Central China Mission. According to an enclosed letter dated 1900 by Frank Lenig, an elder with the Methodist Episcopal Church, Wright used the slides in a traveling presentation (possibly under the auspices of the Lantern Slide and Lecture Department of the Board of Foreign Missions). Although some of the slides are commercially produced, many appear to be taken by Wright, and Lenig remarks that a "native Japanese" was responsible for the hand-coloration on those slides.

Series 11. John Jan papers circa 1940-1992

Scope and Contents

John Jan was Phil Choy's uncle. Jan was a mining engineer who was raised in Sacramento, California, although he was born in China in 1910 while his mother was traveling. His father established Wing Lee Meat Market in 1913. Jan received his BS in mining in 1933 and gained experience in Western mining districts before sailing for China via Hong Kong in 1940.
While he was trying to get a mining job on the mainland he met Rewi Alley, a New Zealander who had co-founded the Chinese Industrial Cooperatives, also known as Indusco. Jan's subsequent assignment was to investigate mining and other industrial conditions in the Southeast, including iron mining and smelting. After four years with C.I.C. he worked for the United Nations (UNRAA) in Chungking, Kwangchou, and Shanghai, where he met his wife whom he married in 1946. His last job in China was in Hunan, working for the Agricultural Industry Service.
Following nine years overseas, Jan returned to the United States in 1948. After a series of unsuccessful attempts at starting his own mining company, Jan took a position at Western Knapp designing copper ore processing plants until his retirement in 1974. Jan's interest in the Civil Rights and Peace movements of the 1960s and 1970s is evident in the many photos he took of marches and demonstrations in San Francisco, as well as items related to normalization between the U.S. and the PRC. His collection also contains many family and mining related photos, as well as correspondence with Alley and other documents related to his work in China. Jan died of cancer in 1983.
