Abstract: Margriet Kiers and Kenna Hicks were long-term romantic partners and were active members of the lesbian feminist activist community in Santa Barbara. This collection is comprised of periodicals, newsletters, correspondence and membership material from Santa Barbara as well as national feminist and LGBT organizations. Also included is personal and professional material from both Kiers and Hicks such as correspondence, education documents, ephemera, journals, poetry, clippings and artwork.

The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archive  at UCLA is an outreach and collection-building partnership between the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives , the UCLA Center for the Study of Women (CSW)  and the UCLA Library . These collections expand the pool of primary source materials available to researchers and to the community at large. This partnership was initiated by CSW and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to inventory, organize, preserve, and digitize more than eighty Mazer collections pertaining to lesbian and feminist activism and writings.

Biography

Kenna Hicks was born August 28th, 1945 in Lawrence County, Ohio. Margriet Kiers was born November 30, 1945 in the Netherlands and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where she majored in Sociology and Psychology. Margriet Kiers and Kenna Hicks were long-term romantic partners and were active members of the lesbian feminist activist community in San Francisco and Santa Barbara. Kiers and Hicks were also business partners, operating a courier service and cleaning service together. Hicks worked for a period as an airline stewardess, and Kiers worked for several doctors and lawyers as a secretary. Both women were interested in LGBT and women's rights, as well as communal living, and woman-owned land cooperatives.

This collection is comprised of periodicals, newsletters, correspondence and membership material from Santa Barbara as well as national feminist and LGBT organizations. Also included is personal and professional material from both Kiers and Hicks such as correspondence, education documents, ephemera, journals, poetry, clippings and artwork. A particular strength of the collection are the publications and materials from organizations that focus on LGBT and women's rights.

Scope and Content

This series contains materials related to Hicks and Kiers' professional activities including documentation of their time working as caretakers of the Willow Retreat in Napa, CA. Also included are materials from the Small Business Administration, a cover letter and resume for Kiers, and advertisements for their courier and cleaning services.
