Biography/Administrative History
Ann Foley Scheuring was an agriculture writer and editor, and a staff associate at the University of California, Davis for
more than 20 years. She was born Mary Ann Foley to Gertrude and Charles Foley on February 15, 1937 in Burns, Oregon. Later
raised in Portland, Oregon, she graduated from St. Mary’s Academy High School in 1954 and the University of Portland in 1958.
She received the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend the University of California, Berkeley in 1958 and then became a Fulbright
Scholar in Germany from 1959-1960. She earned her master’s in literature and composition from Berkeley and completed most
of her doctorate. She married David George Scheuring in 1961, and in 1973 moved to Yolo County, where she worked as staff
associate, writer, and editor at UC Davis.
She is the author of several books and articles, most notably on agricultural history. Her writings include “Tillers: An Oral
History of Family Farms in California,” documenting the experiences of eleven farming families in the region, all located
in the same area for at least 40 years. Foley Scheuring’s books include A Guidebook to California Agriculture (1983), Science
and Service: The History of the Land-Grant University and Agriculture in California (1995), Abundant Harvest: The History
of the University of California, Davis, a campus history published in (2001), and last book Valley Empires: Hugh Glenn and
Henry Mill in the Shaping of California (2010).
Foley Scheuring also co-authored with Professor Dennis Dingemans the University of California, Davis (2013) pictorial documentation
of the campus history that is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Campus History Series. The book uses 230 photographs, with the
UC Davis University Library Special Collections as the primary contributor of over 142 images.
Foley Scheuring was active in various community organizations. She served as president for the League of Women Voters (one
term), was a Yolo County Planning Commission member for eight years, a Friends of the Yolo County Archives board member,
International House in Davis board member, and a member of the Yolo County Mental Health Association.
Ann Foley Scheuring passed away on October 20, 2014, at the age of 77. She is survived by her husband, three children, and
seven grandchildren.
