Series 1. Mary Sheldon Barnes Photographs of North American Indians, 1892-1904
Scope and Contents
Mary Sheldon Barnes was Professor of History at Stanford University from 1892-1897. These photographs were collected by Barnes
and other Stanford faculty and students for her Pacific Slope history classes. Two photographs were almost certainly taken
by Barnes or her students - one of the Castro shellmound in Mayfield and a portrait of Pedro Evencio. The majority of prints
are commercially available images in the form of cabinet cards (& two stereoviews), although some photographs are unpublished
and likely unique. All but two are mounted, and most have stamps indicating "Mary Sheldon Barnes - Stanford University." One
image has a note written after 1906, and so must have been added prior to Barnes' classes.

Peggy, widow of chief Coppa Hembo, with Frank Lawyer, near Garden Valley, El Dorado County, California (1 small print)
1904
Scope and Contents
Snapshot (possibly copy print) with accompanying note written sometime after 1906 signed "W.T.R." Some historians dispute
that Peggy was married to Coppa Hembo, asserting that his wife was a woman named Lucy who died in 1905. These same researchers
place the scene of this photo as "by the Meat Cart, Chicken Flat (Hekeke Toma)."
Related Materials
Note transcribed as follows: "'Peggy' and Frank Lawyer. Picture taken near Garden Valley in 1904. Peggy was the wife of Coppo
Hembo (sometimes written Coppa Himbo), last chief of the Digger Indians in the Kelsey district, El Dorado County. Coppo Hembo
died April 3, 1892, Peggy died September 1906. Both are buried in the old Indian cemetery at Irish Creek near the Georgecroft
place half way between Kelsey and Garden Valley. Coppo was given his name by the Indians after a fight between Coppo and a
bear, his only weapon was a knife. He killed the bear but nearly lost his own life in the battle. According to the Indian
translation, Coppo means bear, Hembo blind. Peggy was a "Tar Head." It was a custom among the Digger Indians when a woman
had lost her husband, the wife would smear her hair with pine tar. Frank Lawyer was born at American Flat near Kelsey 1873,
the son of J.J. Lawyer pioneer store keeper at American Flat. -- W.T.R."

Series 2. John K. Hillers Photographs of Southwestern American Indians
circa 1870-1900
Creator: Hillers, John K., 1843-1925
Scope and Contents
Between 1879 and 1882 photographer John K. Hillers traveled to the American Southwest with Frank Hamilton Cushing and James
Stevenson under the auspices of the Bureau of American Ethnology. This collection of about 270 prints was created sometime
in the early-to-mid 20th century from his 4" x 5" glass plate negatives held by the Smithsonian Institute, and were once cataloged
as a study collection at Stanford (with the call number E78 S7H6). The boxes were transferred from Stanford's Rare Books Collection
in 2013, and were associated with the Barnes collection in 2021. These prints contain numerical codes (ranges are noted after
name of the tribe below), typed notations and SI stamps on their reverse. Some tribes may be represented by only one or few
prints, and files for Zuni, Ute, Paiute, and Hopi Indians are larger.
