Scope and Contents

The hand written document is a court record that states the defendant, R. C. Brooks, asserts he did not claim his still and/or pay the duties and tax due on the fermented spirits that he produced with said still. The paper is filed in the "US District Court of Northern California." The court record case number is 308 and a verdict was handed down on September 12th, 1866 in favor of the claimant (the IRS) and resulted in R.C. Brooks being forced to forfeit "one copper still".
