Osterbrock's activities as astronomer and science writer, director of the Lick
Observatory, and Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the
University of California, Santa Cruz.
Donald E. Osterbrock
(1924-2007) was the director of Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton in
California, an astronomer, and historian of science. Osterbrock studied the
birth of stars and luminous clouds of gas at the core of galaxies outside the
Milky Way known as gaseous nebulae.
