Abstract: Captain John Grotle logbooks and license (SAFR 17578, HDC 380) contains four original logbooks, nine reproductions of logbooks compiled by Captain Ed Shields and one wartime sailing license. Most of the logbooks are from cod-fishing trips in the Bering Sea. The original logbooks are for the C.A. THAYER (built 1895; schooner, 3m), AZALEA (schooner), JOHN A. (built 1893, schooner, 3m) and FANNY DUTARD (schooner). The vessels named in the copied logbooks are CARRIER DOVE (built 1884; schooner, 2m), NELLIE COLEMAN (built 1883; schooner), MAID OF ORLEANS (built 1882; schooner, 2m), JOHN A. (built 1893; schooner, 3m), FANNY DUTARD (schooner), AZALEA (schooner) and CHARLES R. WILSON (schooner, 3m).Some of the reproduced logbooks contain maps, pictures of the respective vessel and a brief biographical description of the vessel. The collection is available for use without restriction.
