Scope and Contents

This collection consists of scripts, papers, and publicity materials for film projects by American screenwriter Ernest Lehman (1915-2005). Materials include approximately 130 screenplays and approximately 120 synopses of potential projects, production materials, script drafts, outlines, publicity memos, correspondence, budgets, and contracts. Includes materials for the films The Prize (1963), The Sound of Music (1965), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and Hell Dolly! (1969). Among the miscellaneous screenplays are a number for 20th Century-Fox musical comedies.

Biographical / Historical

Ernest Lehman (1915-2005) was an American screenwriter, producer, and director. Among his most notable works are The King and I (1956), the screenplay adaptations of the musical West Side Story (1961) and the film version of The Sound of Music (1965).
