Biographical/Historical note
The architectural firm Kanner Architects, based in Los Angeles, California, was started in 1946 by I. Herman Kanner. In 1974,
Herman’s son Charles took over the firm. After Charles’ death in 1998, his son Stephen Kanner headed the firm.
Stephen Kanner was born in 1955 in Brentwood, California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned
a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture graduating in 1980. After graduating, Kanner found work in the offices of
Sidmore Owings & Merrill as a project architect on Universal City’s Texaco Tower as well as the Hughes Headquarters building
in Marina Del Rey, California. Stephen Kanner joined Kanner Architects in 1982 and worked with his father on commercial and
residential projects. Over the course of firm’s life some notable projects include: United Oil Gasoline Station (Los Angeles,
California), In-N-Out Burger restaurant (Westwood, California), Metro-Hollywood Transit Village (Hollywood), Sunset Vine Tower
(Los Angeles), the Montana Collection (Brentwood)and 26th Street Affordable Housing (Santa Monica). Stephen Kanner died in
2011, at the age of 54.
Scope and Content note
The Kanner Architects records span approximately 150 linear feet and date from circa 1960 to circa 2007. Documenting three
generations of Kanner family architecture this collection is composed primarily of architectural drawings, but also includes
photographic prints, models, yearly planners and project files. Yearly planners or datebooks in the collection document the
years 1977 to 1997 and 2000 to 2009. Project files are composed of correspondence, project data, working drawings and/or sketches,
and are organized by project. Models in the collection document the following structures: 26th Street and Santa Monica Affordable
Housing, Nevin Avenue School (Los Angeles, California), Sagaponak house (New York, New York), Sunset Vine Tower (Los Angeles,
California), United Oil Gas Station (Los Angeles, California), the Zelman Goldfarb house (Malibu, California), and the Harvard
Apartments.
