Scope and contents

This series includes article excerpts, academic journals, magazines, and newspaper clippings relating to events within the civil rights movement, Harry Edwards' career, professional sports, and political activism. The 1968 Mexico City Olympics is featured heavily throughout the series and the bulk of the material was created from 1967-1969.

This series is organized chronologically. Oversized correspondence is listed seperately.

Scope and Contents

This series includes letters with a number of persons, institutions, and publishers with whom Dr. Edwards corresponded over the years. Notable names include tennis champion Arthur Ashe, Olympian John Carlos, Congressman Adam C. Powell, former U.S. President Barack Obama, Forty-Niners coach Bill Walsh, San Jose State College president Robert Clark, and football coach Gerry Faust. Some correspondence has accompanying material, such as a copy of Harry Edwards' FBI profile, photographs, newspaper clippings, and envelopes.

Series IV. Publicity and Outreach Materials 1965-2018

Arrangement

This series is divided into five subseries based on subject. All subseries are organized alphabetically by title.

Scope and Contents

This series comprises promotional materials divided into five subseries by subject matter. Subseries 1. Civil Rights and Protest consists of documents, buttons, flyers, pamphlets, and ephemera by organizations and individuals in support or against the political activity during the civil rights movement in the late 1960s to early 1980s. Subseries 2. Conferences, Events, and Programs includes posters, booklets, flyers, programs, and audio cassettes from events Harry Edwards guest lectured at, was featured in, or attended. Subseries 3. Exhibitions consist of poster boards and posters used in San José State University exhibitions, including the 2018 educational equity series, 2012 Legacy Week, and the 2016/2018 "Power of Protest" exhibitions. Sub-series 4. Press Releases consist primarily of press releases by the organizations with vested interest in the civil rights movement and the protest at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Subseries 5. Sports and Athletics contains posters, schedules, booklets, and questionnaires published by the Olympics, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Golden State Warriors.

Arrangement

This series is organized alphabetically by subject.

Scope and Contents

This series contains photographs and illustrations of Dr. Harry Edwards, Sandra Boze Edwards, Bill Walsh, John Carlos, Tommie Smith, Ronnie Ray Smith, David Smith, Ron Freeman, and Charlie Mays. A majority of the content was produced from 1967-1985, with earlier photographs involving members and prospective contributors to the Olympic Committee for Human Rights. Also included are the original images used for his book, The Revolt of the Black Athlete), as well as the accompanying correspondence from the publisher.

Scope and Contents

This series includes numerous artifacts, memorabilia, and textiles that commemorate or are relevant to Dr. Harry Edwards' career as scholar-activist. Contained in Subseries 1. Artifacts and Memorabilia are awards, a paperweight, a SJSC discus, a Super Bowl ticket, and a signed trading card. In Subseries 2. Textiles include Dr. Edwards' SJSC letterman jacket that was awarded to him for the academic year 1962-1963, a "Jim Brown (from the movie The Dirty Dozen), 1967)" army jacket, a Negro League Baseball Museum jersey, political t-shirts, commemorative blankets, and an armband.
