Physical Description:
1 film
(15:41 min.)
Scope and Contents
This film features Picnic Day in 1939 and was recorded by
Remi C. O'Connor of the Class of 1941. It contains the oldest
known footage of campus. Picnic Day was celebrated that year
on Saturday, April 22 after rain damage and the demolition of
the Classroom Building caused the event to be cancelled in
1938.
The film, which runs for 15 minutes, begins on Friday,
April 21 with scenes of students preparing campus for Picnic
Day. Friday's activities also included judging contests for
beef cattle, dairy cattle, and poultry for the Future Farmers
of America. Footage of Saturday's Picnic Day events commences
with the Northern California Inter-High School Track Meet.
Other parts of the event that are filmed include: a honey bee
hive demonstration, fashion show, parade featuring the Cal
Aggie ROTC unit as well as floats by living groups and campus
clubs, band demonstrations including a performance by the Cal
Aggie Marching Band, and a horse show. The recording ends
with students cleaning up campus on Sunday.

From the container: "In the first Road Trip ever shot
exclusively on a UC campus, Huell spends the day at UC Davis.
All of the stops he made are open to the public as well as
the students. Huell learned all about the famous bicycle
culture of Davis at the Bike Barn, got up close and personal
with some bugs at the Bohart Museum of Entomology and visited
the beautiful UC Davis Arboretum. He also enjoyed a meal at
the Segundo Dining Commons and a cup of coffee at the
Coffeehouse, which is believed to be the largest student-run
restaurant in the nation. Next it was off to the Department
of Animal Science Horse Barn that has been around since 1910.
Then, he visited the Native American studies department's
C.N. Gorman Museum and ended wiht a stop at the California
Raptor Center. Huell got around on the student-run Unitrans
that provides public transportation service to the entire
city with over 40 buses on 15 routes, carrying more than
three million passengers a year."
