Scope and Contents

This collection documents the Stanford University student group Power2ACT, an advocacy and support group for Stanford students with disabilities and their allies. The collection contains records relating to the organization and structure of Power2ACT, including meeting notes, promotional materials, and documentation of activities and group operations. Records were created by members of the group, and relate to in-person events that took place on the Stanford campus 2017-2019.

Biographical / Historical

Stanford Power2ACT: Abilities Coming Together is a student-run advocacy and support group for Stanford students with disabilities and their allies. The purpose of Power2ACT is to create a community of disability advocates on campus, raise awareness of disabilities, provide events, and create a safe space for open dialogue and exchange of ideas within the Stanford community. Their mission is as follows: 1. To create and foster a community of advocates for the disability community on Stanford's campus. 2. To create a safe space for open dialogue and exchange of ideas both within the community and in association with other student organizations. 3. To advocate for students' with disabilities needs to the University in regards to access to all aspects of university life. The group will work extensively with the Office of Accessible Education and the Diversity and Access Office. 4. To provide Stanford with information about the disability community's current and historical issues through hosted events. 5. To connect with other student community organizations, to expand the reach of Power2ACT throughout the Stanford community, and to raise awareness about disability on campus.

Power2ACT was formed in 2009-2010 by Vivian Wong '12 and Krystal Le '14. As a sophomore in 2009, Vivian Wong realized that there was no disability community space or student organization. At the time, students with disabilities comprised more than 7 percent of the student body at Stanford. Vivan worked with ASSU to create a new position in the ASSU executive cabinet: the Chair of Disabilities and Accessible Education (now the ASSU disability leads). Vivian teamed up with Krystal Le '14 to create Power2ACT, a safe space for students with visible and hidden disabilities. Aubrie Lee '14 and Morgan Duffy '13 succeeded them as Power2ACT leaders. Power2ACT's early work included developing a peer mentorship program, spreading awareness about disabilities, creating a map of accessible locations on campus, and creating a welcome video for the Office of Accessible Education in 2012. They also have spent time organizing for a disability campus center.
