    Biographical / Historical

    Harry Dov Weininger was born September 28, 1933 in Czernowitz, which at that time was part of Romania, and is now part of Ukraine. His family emigrated to the United States in 1950, settling in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army, graduated from officer candidate school in 1958, and received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1960. He moved to Berkeley in 1963 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He received his J.D. at age 54 from the University of San Francisco in 1988. He was the owner of the Carpet Center and was very active in Berkeley's civic, business and cultural affairs. He ran for Berkeley City Council in 1975, was president of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of the Berkeley Democratic Club, and served in various capacities for the Rotary Club of Berkeley, City of Berkeley Civic Arts Commission and Planning Commission, and Planned Parenthood. His long friendship with David Lance Goines began shortly after Weininger's arrival in Berkeley. Harry Weininger died May 31, 2010.

    Scope and Content

    Posters and other material collected by Weininger during his lengthy and close association with Goines. Includes a nearly complete run of the artist's posters through no. 222. Other material includes Thirty Recipes Suitable for Framing (an early collaboration between Goines and Alice Waters); illustrations for the Chez Panisse Cafe Cookbook; an early print illustrating six Old Testament stories; a series of "mistake" poster prints; exhibition announcements; greeting cards and other correspondence; advertisements; calendars; miscellaneous small publications; and Bay Area newspaper clippings which document Goines' career. A large percentage of the prints are signed artist's proofs, designate "a.p." in this item listing.

    Books and catalogs by and/or pertaining to David Lance Goines transferred to the Book Collections of the The Bancroft Library and cataloged individually. Typescript copy of the unpublished Words and Days (1994) transferred to the Manuscript Collections of the Bancroft Library (BANC MSS 2011/218).
