Historical or Biographical Note

The collection contains a rough daily logbook from a vessel identified on the cover page as the DOROTHY LUCKENBACH QUINN but the true name of the vessel was the DOROTHY LUCKENBACH. This ship was a vessel in the Luckenbach Steamship Company fleet, a major American shipping company for over 100 years. This ship was built in 1919 by Sun Shipbuilding in Chester, PA for the US Shipping Board (a predecessor of the U.S. Maritime Administration) and was originally named the EDELLYN. She was a twin screw steamship of 6,370 tons. In 1922, she was renamed the DOROTHY LUCKENBACH. In 1944, the ship was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy and renamed the ERNEST KORANDA. She was returned to owners in 1946 and again named the Dorothy Luckenbach. The ship was scrapped in 1957 in Oakland, California.
