Abstract: This collection contains programs, flyers, reports, newspapers, magazines, books, DVDs, VHS tapes, t-shirts, and other material belonging to Florante Peter Ibanez. A majority of the material in this collection relates to Filipino American events, organizations, history and culture. This collection also contains material related to Chinese American, Japanese American, Hawaiian; and other Asian American and Pacific Islander events and organizations.

Scope and Contents

The Florante Peter Ibanez Collection (1938-2020; undated; bulk 1970-2009) contains 25 boxes and 17.32 linear feet of programs, flyers, brochures, reports, newspapers, magazines, books, audiovisual material, photographs, and other material belonging to Florante Peter Ibanez. The majority of this collection contains documents regarding Filipino American events, organizations, history, and culture; as well as material regarding other Asian American and Pacific Islander events and organizations. Series One: Personal Papers contains correspondence; certificates; a notebook and notes for Kanji, Hiragana, and Tagalog to English words and phrases; California State Library reference guide and Library Services Board oath; copies of presentations and speeches given by Ibanez; and an article about Ibanez. Series Two: Subject File contains programs, flyers, brochures, articles, and ephemera regarding Asian American and Pacific Islander events, organizations, musicians, film, theatre, literature, exhibits, politics, conferences, workshops, labor, and communities, and includes material related to: Filipino American Library, Filipino American National Historical Society, Larry Itliong Day, Kababayan, Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture, Manzanar Pilgrimage, Filipino-American Democratic Caucus, Philippine-American Los Angeles Democrats (PALAD), Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), Little Tokyo Historical Society, the Chinese American Museum, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Visual Communications, Archives Bazaar, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, East West Players, and others. Series Three: Publications contains issues of Ang Katipunan, Gidra, Filipina Magazine, Heritage, Filipino Martial Arts; and other newspapers and magazines regarding Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Series Four: Reports, Essays, Course Readers, and Other Published Material contains reports, proceedings, essays, poems, manga, zines, yearbooks, course readers, calendar and cultural guides, and other published material mostly related to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This series contains documents related to martial law in the Philippines; the Philippine-American War; Jose Garcia Villa; Jose Rizal; race and discrimination; Asian American and Pacific Islander communities; Philippine sheet music; and other related topics. Also included in this series are a few Asian American and Pacific Islander course readers; "Roots. Asian American Movements in Los Angeles" zine; manga; African American Heritage Month, Calendar and Cultural Guide; and "Asian American Yearbooks 2007/2008" and "Asian American Yearbooks 2009/2010". Series Five: T-Shirts contains t-shirts featuring images of Filipino organizations and events; as well as for fundraisers, elections, unions, political movements, and others. Series Six: Audiovisual Material and Photographs contains DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, and photographs regarding Asian American and Pacific Islanders. Series Seven: Ephemera contains business cards, yo-yos, pins, membership cards, ticket stubs, and other material related to Filipino American; and Asian American and Pacific Islander events and organizations.

Books and bound periodicals that were donated as part of this collection have been separated from the archival collection and will be catalogued separately. Oversized material has been removed to map case 4, drawer 5.

Biographical / Historical

Florante Peter Ibanez is a librarian, archivist, and scholar of Asian American studies. He is a retired manager of library computer services at Loyola Law School; adjunct professor at Loyola Marymount University and Pasadena City College; member of the California Library Services Board; UCLA Library and Information Studies Diversity Council member; UCLA Pilipino Alumni advisory board member, and committee member of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Asian Pacific Islander Affairs. A native of Southern California, Ibanez grew up at his mother's home in the South Bay, and his father's home in Watts after his parents divorced when he was three. Ibanez then lived in Carson after his father moved there when he was in junior high school, and he stayed there to attend California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Ibanez went on to attend University of California, Irvine (UCI) where he earned his bachelor's degree in comparative cultures in 1977. Prior to enrolling at UCI, Ibanez helped found UCLA Samahang Pilipino while working as a resource development coordinator at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. While at UCI, Ibanez became involved with Filipino American community organizations including Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) which was formed in 1972, co-founded UCI Kababayan, and was an advocate for the creation of the UCI Cross Cultural Center. Ibanez has also written a book on Filipino American history entitled "Filipinos in Carson and the South Bay" (2009) by Arcadia Publishing; as well as contributed to other publications such as ""Hawaiians in Los Angeles," (2012) "Filipinos in San Diego," (2010) and "Filipinos in Los Angeles" (2007) all by Arcadia Publishing; "Shades of California: The Hidden Beauty of Ordinary Life" (Heyday Press, 2001); "Letters in Exile: A Pilipino American Anthology" (UCLA Press, 1976); and "Through the Archival Looking Glass: A Reader on Diversity and Inclusion" (Society of American Archivists, 2014).
During his career, Ibanez has served as president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (2010-2011); diversity chair of the Southern California chapter of Special Libraries Association (SLA); executive committee member of LA as Subject; served on the board of directors for SIPA (1994-2000); Filipino American Arts & Culture (FilAm Arts) board member (2000-2010); board member of the Filipino American Library in Los Angeles; advisory board member of the Serve the People Institute; and member of American Library Association (ALA), Association of Law Libraries, the California Library Association (CLA), and Society of American Archivists (SAA).
