    Scope and Contents

    Collection consists primarily of scripts and essays written by director, writer, producer William C. DeMille (1878-1955) and his wife, writer Clara Beranger (1886-1956). Also includes clippings, playbills, correspondence, and miscellaneous production materials covering the years 1896-1953. Includes approximately 60 screenplays; 17 play scripts (1903-1940); drama and cinema articles written by Demille between 1909-1940; clippings, playbills, correspondence, and miscellaneous production materials; approximately 34 albums containing photographs of silent films produced or directed by DeMille. Among the screenplays are The Explorer (1915), Common Ground (1916), Craig's Wife (1928), Mad Love (1935), Smilin' Through (1941), Unconquered (1947), and The Greatest Show on Earth (1952).

    Biographical / Historical

    William C. DeMille (1878-1955) was an American film director and producer. He began his career writing plays and began working in film during the silent film era. He focused his film career on adapting stage plays to silent films. He was the elder brother to Cecil B. DeMille.
