Scope and Content Note

This series contains Michelson's correspondence spanning from her early career in Paris in the 1960s to her later career in New York including correspondence until 2014. Her letters sent and received reveal the nature of her personal and professional relationships and how often times the two conflicted. Correspondents of note include Yvonne Rainer, Susan Sontag, Maurice Tuchman, and Harald Szeemann. This series also includes Michelson's rolodex.

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically by year and then by correspondent. Letters of recommendation and contacts are found at the end of the series. Open for use by qualified researchers, with the exception of unreformatted born digital materials, which are unavailable until reformatted.

Scope and Content Note

This series covers Michelson's broad range of interests in avant-garde production in both contemporary art and experimental cinema. Her professional papers contain writing, ranging from her early work in Paris and then for Artforum to her later work for October and her contributions to a variety of other publications over the years. Also inclduded are extensive writings by others, either as submissions to October, student papers, or research. Michelson's research files on Maya Deren, Sergei Eisenstein, Hollis Frampton, and Dziga Vertov are especially rich.
Titles may reflect research subjects, symposia or conferences (institution names are used when conference titles were not identified), and essays or articles. Essays and articles by Michelson are filed under publication name, article name, or with the corresponding subject file. Essays and articles by others are filed under author name. Various essays by others can be found in New York University files, October submissions and at the end of the series. Dates refer to the scope of included papers or publication dates for essays, articles and book projects. Items with sticky notes or items printed on thermal fax paper have been photocopied onto archival paper and interfiled with the original corresponding documents. While series I contains the bulk of the Michelson correspondence as identified by her as such, there is also correspondence filed in series II. Unidentified materials, clippings, ephemera, and photocopied publications are found at the end of the series.

Arrangement

File are arranged alphabetically. Unreformatted audio visual and born digital materials are unavailable until reformatted.
Evaluated student papers in box 60 and 157 are sealed for students' lifetimes. Michelson's medical papers in box 52 and 155 are sealed for her lifetime plus fifty years.
