Scope and Content
The album contains 16 photographs (11.4 x 14.8 cm or smaller) of Stratford Works, the locomotive-building works of the Great
Eastern Railway, located in Stratford, London, England, opened in 1847-1848 by Great Eastern's predecessor, Eastern Counties
Railway. Photographs include an exterior shot of the factory on the title-page, and, inside, photographs of the Erecting Shop,
Boiler Shop, Machine Shop, Wheel Shop, Model Motion shop, Carriage Shop, Saw Mill, Wagon Shop, Laboratory, Running Shed, a
Stratford-made Passenger Train, a Goods Train, and three types of rolling stock built at the Works: locomotive, passenger
car, and freight car. Interleaved throughout the leaves of photographs are 63 leaves of signatures, presumably of workers
and management staff at the factory. The last three leaves are blank.
