Burrill Hartigan used a two-ringed "University Loose Leaf Note Book'" (Stationery
Department, F.W. Woolworth Co.) to record notes in neat, cursive script on 96 hand-numbered
lined pages, most of which contain detailed handwritten entries from lectures in "Class A"
and "Class B" in a cosmetology school. The author presumably was a student preparing for a
career as a beautician. Entires cover subjects such as frequent shampooing, hand drying,
backward shampooing and shampoo formulas, castile shampoo, coconut oil shampoo, tar shampoo,
medicated shampoo, special shampoos and rinses, bluing rinse, chamomile rinse, hot oil
shampoo, dry shampoo, gasoline shampoo, points to remember in shampooing, clipping the hair,
singing the hair, cutting ends of the hair, thinning the hair, Wilfred scalp treatment,
Wilfred scalp message, nerves, effects of faradic current (electrotherapy), steaming the
scalp, sterilization, finger nails, facial message (sagginess of the face, double chin,
sunken face, puffiness of cheeks, wrinkles, etc.), high frequency and colored lights,
effects of blue light on dry skin, high frequency on violet ray, how to give a facial,
Wilfred steam facial, acne treatment, make-up, eyebrows, faradism and galvanism, round
curling, special hot oil facial, Swedish massage, physiological effects, and more.
