This collection
consists of the organizational records of the Jewish Education Council. This includes
correspondence, meeting minutes, organizational writings, and other educational ephemeral
materials. The materials are arranged in alphabetical order.
Background
The Jewish Education Council of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties was established as an
agency of the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay to help standardize, develop, and
maintain the education of the Jewish community in the East Bay. Rabbi Sidney Akselrad,
President of the East Bay Board of Rabbis, was a chairman of the Jewish Education Council of
Alameda and Contra Costa Counties at its inception. He was chairman when they invited
Seymour Fromer to become the founding director of the organization. The Jewish Education
Council operated approximately from the 1950s to the 1980s.
