Scope and Content of Collection

A life-long historian, Norman Neuerburg (1926-1997) studied at UCLA, the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University, and as a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. Neuerburg was not only a professor in art history, but he also worked as an art preservationist and restorer, as a consultant to the California Mission System, the J. Paul Getty Museum, El Pueblo de Los Angeles and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historical Preservation, as well as a curator at the Southwest Museum. Neuerburg organized his collection into a series of binders filled with images and his personal and work related documents. These collections aided Neuerburg’s consultation work and focused on the history of art and architecture throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe. The image collection includes images of paintings, engravings, sculpture, pottery, furniture, gardens, religious buildings, individual dwellings, royal dwellings, city architecture and planning, museum architecture, and natural and manmade historical sites. The image collection consists of photographs, slides, postcards, and negatives with limited labelling and notes. The document collection includes correspondences, manuscript drafts, research notes, travel information, newspaper and magazine clippings, newsletter subscriptions, books excerpts, photographs of artworks and architecture, restoration consultation work, and personal papers. Personal papers consist of correspondence, employment records, financial records and receipts, and inventories of donated collections.
