Howard Pyle was born on March 5, 1853 in Wilmington, Delaware; he attended private schools, art school in Philadelphia for
three years, and Art Student's League in New York; studied under F.A. Van der Wielan; became an author, artist, painter, teacher
of illustration, and writer of children's stories; worked as as illustrator for Scribner's monthly; taught illustration at
Drexel Institute of Arts and Sciences in Philadelphia, 1894-1900, later establishing his own art school in Wilmington; published
works include The merry adventures on Robin Hood of great renown in Nottinghamshire (1883), Otto of the silver hand (1883),
Men of iron (1892), The story of King Arthur and his knights (1903), and The story of the Grail and the passing of Arthur
(1910); he died on November 9, 1911 in Florence, Italy.
His sister, Katharine Pyle, was born in Wilmington, DE; her published works include The rabbit witch (1897), The counterpane
fairy (1898), Tales from far and near (1922), and Charlemagne and his knights (1932); she died on February 19, 1938.
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of ephemera relating to Howard Pyle and his students, including illustrations, page proofs, galleys, and
ephemera. The work of his sister, Katharine Pyle, and some of his students are also included.
