Biography/Administrative History

Robert C. Pavlik was an Environmental Planner with the California Department of Transportation. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he was raised in the San Fernando Valley, and grew up hiking and traveling in remote places throughout California. In 1979 he graduated from California State University, Northridge with a degree in Liberal Studies and Anthropology. He holds a teaching credential from San Francisco State University and an M.A. in Public Historical Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara. He has worked as a State Park Ranger at Big Sur, an Environmental Education Instructor at Yosemite National Park, and as an historian for the National Park Service in Yosemite. He worked for over six years as State Historian at Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. Robert has published in magazines, journals, and newspapers, including California History, The Californians, Yosemite, The Public Historian, Material Culture, California History Action, Washington Free Press, and Oral History Review. His poetry has appeared in the San Luis Obispo Tribune, Perspectives, Hopedance, Washington Free Press, and the Web site, "Poets Against the War." In 2012 he received the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award, a statewide award for excellence in historic preservation. Nominated members of the Carrizo Plains National Monument Advisory Committee were appointed by Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne in 2006. The role of the committee was to advise the Secretary and the Bureau of Land Management on resource management issues at the monument. Robert C. Pavlik was appointed to a three-year term on the volunteer committee in 2006. His appointment was supported by local rancher Neil Havlik, retired Yosemite National Park Superintendent Bob Binnewies, and Heritage Shared, Inc. a nonprofit organization located in San Luis Obispo.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains records related to Robert Pavlik’s role and activities on the Carrizo Plains National Monument Advisory Committee. Records include correspondence between Robert Pavlik and Bob Binnewies; minutes, agendas, and materials of the Advisory Committee meetings; newspaper clippings related to the CPNM events, projects, staff, and volunteers; and agency reports related to conservation, environmental impacts, land management, and proposed oil drilling; and clippings and correspondence related to the career of Marlene Braun (1958 – 2005), former Carrizo Plain Monument Manager. The collection also includes newspaper clippings, brochures, and correspondence related to the San Luis Obispo Poetry Festival with which he was involved, as well as correspondence with Loren Nicholson of the La Cuesta Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. And, includes documents related to local historian Wilfred Lyons (1912 – 2009) of Cambria, who sent annual holiday greetings to his friends and colleagues consisting of an historical photo and a brief historical narrative.
