Biography
Anthony "Tony" William Reevy was born on August 2, 1961 in Lubbock, Texas. He moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1976 and
graduated from High School there in 1979. In 1983, Reevy received a civil engineering degree from North Carolina State University
in Raleigh, which included a graduate-level railroad engineering course. In 1984, he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina
and in 1986, he earned an MBA in Marketing from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. In 1988, he received a MS in Mass
Communication at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Tony Reevy started a career in university public affairs, development, and administration in 1986, when he worked as a promotion
and development assistant at WMBU-FM at Miami University. He worked at WAMU-FM, at The American University, Washington, D.C.
starting in 1987 as a development associate, and was promoted to the position of corporate relations manager in 1989.
In 1990, Reevy moved to WFAE-FM at North Carolina State University at Charlotte to the position of Director of Development
and in 1993, was promoted to Director of Corporate Development. He moved back to Durham in 1994 to take the position of Director
of Library Development, NCSU Libraries, North Carolina State University at Raleigh. In 2001, he became the Associate Director
for Advancement and Lecturer for the Carolina Environmental Program / UNC Institute for the Environment at University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and in 2007 was promoted to Senior Associate Director and Lecturer there.
Mr. Reevy has a long-standing interest in poetry and railroads. His focus is on the influence of the American railroad on
American folklore, photography, and literature. He has written numerous books and articles about railroad history. The articles
include a series "Artists of the rails" for the Railway & Historical Society's Railroad History publication. Subjects include:
O. Winston Link, Phil Hastings, Jack Delano, David Plowden, Jim Shaughnessy, and Lucius Beebe. Several articles were expanded
and published as books: O. Winston Link: Life along the line: A photographic portrait of America's last great steam railroad
(2012), The Railroad Photography of Jack Delano (2015), and The Railroad Photography of Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg (2019).
The railroad photography of Phil Hastings is due to be published in 2023. In addition, Mr. Reevy's written several books
of poetry, a book about ghosts, a guide to railroad structures in North Carolina and an unpublished book about railroad whistles.
Mr. Reevy has served on the Board of Directors for several historical societies including the Norfolk & Southern Historical
Society, which he co-founded, (2001 to present), the Museum of Durham History (2009-2012), North Carolina Rail-Trails (1991-present),
and the Old North State Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (1996-2002). He was also an Advisory editor to Railroad
History, 2000-, and a member of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society and the Center for Railroad Photography and Art,
where he was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Center for Railroad Photography and Art Conference. He served as Chair of the
Policy Board for the Albermarle-Pamico Estuary Program (2005-2012), chaired the Museum of Durham History's Strategic Plan
Committee (2009—2011), The Albemarle Pamico National Estuary Program (2010-2012), and the North Carolina Rail-Trails Nominating
Committee (2007) and By-Laws Committee (2008-2012).
In 2006, Reevy won the David P. Morgan article award presented by the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society for his essay
on the life and work of Lucius Beebe "Writers of the Rail: Mixed Legacy". In 2014, Reevy received the John H. White, Jr. research
fellowship from the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society and a grant from the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill's
University Research Council in 2015 for his work on Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg. He has been a member of the Lexington
Group of Transportation History since 2009 and won their 2014 Richard C. Overton Fellowship prize for his work on Jack Delano.
Tony Reevy is married to Caroline Weaver and has two children, daughter Lindley and son Ian.

The material in this collection documents various aspects of Tony Reevy's writings, which include articles and books about
railroad photographers Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg, Jack Delano, O. Winston Link, David Plowden, Jim Shaugnessy, railroads,
railroad structures, the rails-to-trails conservation programs in North Carolina, and railroad folklore such as ghost stories,
music, and railroad sounds. Subject files include information about awards he received, promotional events including readings
he gave, and his advocacy for rails-to-trails. Tony Reevy is also a poet, but most of his work is not represented here. There
is one folder of his poetry.

Includes copies of published articles, early drafts and critiques of books, book proposals and outlines, correspondence, photograph
captions and photocopies of photographs, research material including photocopies of newspaper clippings and manuscript material,
including an oral history of an O. Winston Link associate, a book contract for GHOST TRAIN!, and an expense list for it. There
is some fan mail for his book on railroad ghosts.
There are compact disks containing photographs from the Library of Congress for THE RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY OF JACK DELANO, photographs
to accompany an article about country singer Jimmie Rodgers, "Singing Brakeman," a disc containing two O. Winston Link photographs
of Norfolk and Western, three disks containing sound recordings from the collection of O. Winston Link, two Powerpoint presentations:
"The Railroads of Durham," (2005) and another about O. Winston Link, and a disc containing a copy of the second edition of
A DIRECTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA'S STRUCTURES.

files pertain to the American Tobacco Trail and the North Carolina Rails-to-Trails program. Tony Reevy was an early supporter
and board member of the North Carolina Rail-Trails, a program that reimagined abandoned rail tracks as open spaces and walking
