    Donated to History San Jose in 2016. The donor purchased the materials at an estate sale in Ben Lomond, California.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Mabel Stoppelworth appears to have grown up in San Jose, California, graduating from Gardner School in 1916. She obtained her California Teachers Certificate in 1923, and taught in Monterey County, Alameda County, and San Jose State College Demonstration School. She retired around 1959. She was first married to William Edward Healy, with whom she had a son Norman (b. 1925), but later married Arthur Briggs Willson, a real estate developer in the Santa Clara Valley.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Personal papers and photographs related to Arthur Willson, Mabel Stoppelworth Willson, and related Healy and Schroeder families. Papers mainly document Mabel Stoppelworth's teaching career (1923-1959) in Alameda County and San Jose, with photographs of her immediate family in the 1910s and 1920s. Other papers include clippings on her son Norman Edward Healy, and school records of Elsie Stoppelworth. A small number of photographs feature members of the Schroeder family, to whom the Stoppelworths were related by marriage.
